Why Self-Love is Important and How it Can Change Your Life NOW!

Self-love is the foundation of your well-being. It is one of the keys to a life of happiness, resilience, and growth. When you truly love yourself, everyone and everything else in your life falls into place.

You’re able to make great decisions, choose relationships that are worthy of you, or even give back to others!

Having self-love is more than being confident in yourself. It is treating yourself with the same kind of care that you would to others who are close to you.

Why is Self-Love Important?

  • A huge factor of self-love is the improvement of your mental health. It is the entryway to healing from various internal issues, helping you to realize your growth to keep pushing. You learn to accept yourself for who you are, flaws and all.

An eye-opening experience for me was during a walk after work last year. It was summertime, so I took frequent walks after work as a means to decompress from the day I had. A car drove past and a guy stuck his head out the window and screamed: “You are Beautiful!”

For the rest of the day and the following days, I felt that assurance. That reminder from someone else that I am beautiful made me realize how often I neglected that belief.

Because of my past experiences and mistakes that I’ve made, I struggle sometimes to look in the mirror and see the woman I am today. Yes, my past has shaped me into who I am, but that doesn’t mean that I have to remain in the mindset of who I WAS.


I am still working on loving myself and unraveling negative thoughts and feelings. It will continue to be a work in progress, but I strive every day to accept and love myself just as I am.

  • Self-love not only improves your relationship with yourself but also your relationship with others. You learn to let go of people who bring negativity or toxicity and attract more positive people in your life.
  • Your confidence becomes greater when you love yourself as well. This helps you pursue anything that you put your mind to because you believe in yourself.

Great Ways to Love Yourself

We hear all the time that self-love is great, and self-love is a must, but how do you love yourself?

  • Making time for yourself to recharge your body and mind is a great way to take care of YOU. Things like meditating, exercising, journaling, taking walks, or resting are great self-care activities that you can practice.

    But there’s more!

  • Show yourself compassion and grace. Be as understanding and patient with yourself as you would with someone close to you if they made mistakes. You won’t judge and look down upon them, so don’t do that to yourself.

    You are human as much as anyone else, and making mistakes is a part of our lives.
  • Replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts instead. If you have to write positive affirmations down or even listen to them, make it a habit.

    Whenever you are thinking negatively about yourself, remember the positive things about yourself instead.
    Allow these positive thoughts to get you through that rough patch and remind you how great you are.
  • Forgive yourself! This is a huge one. Oftentimes we beat ourselves up over and over because of past mistakes. Replaying the events in our mind as if they happened yesterday.

    The fact is: WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES AND HAVE THINGS THAT WE AREN’T PROUD OF!

    The key is to learn from it and keep moving forward because there’s more life waiting for you.
  • Hold on to who you are regardless of what relationships you acquire. Sometimes, when we get into relationships, we lose ourselves. This could be friends or partners.

    We lose sight of who we are, no longer doing the things that we enjoyed before those relationships.

    Setting boundaries can help you stay true to yourself without feeling bad for saying no. This protects your overall well-being.

Embrace self-love to change your life

Life is a challenge and self-love helps you to become resilient, being able to bounce back from adversity and challenges that you will continue to face.

You will get to be a witness to your own personal growth as you continue to excel.

When you love and accept yourself for who you are, you become happy. You no longer seek validation and fulfillment from outside sources because you have a strong foundation within YOU.

Practicing self-love is a journey that you will embark on for life. But it will forever be worth every effort!
